The lactation smoothie is great for breast feeding mommies, but anybody can try it as an energy boosting smoothie…
With mommies being made aware of the benefits of breast feeding more and more new mommies are keen in breastfeeding now. Which is great, but that is definitely your personal choice and what works for you and your baby. Some times even if you choose to breast feed, you might find it difficult because of not having enough supply to meet your baby’s needs. If that is your case, then continue reading because this post is about one great method to increase your milk supply. This post is about one fantastic lactation smoothie which helped me a lot. My baby is almost one year old (her birthday is on 22 Jan) and I still continue to feed her breast milk along with all other food. But at the beginning I had low milk and the lactation smoothie is one thing which helped me. The best thing about the lactation smoothie is that it is super easy to make and it really works.
The lactation smoothie
You need just few ingredients to experience the blissful feeling you get while feeding your baby that you might have not had due to low milk supply. So lets get to the ingredients that we need to make the amazing lactation smoothie.
1 cup almond milk
1/3 cup rolled oats
1 tbsp peanut butter
2 tbsp honey
1 tbsp brewers yeast
1 tbsp flax seed
1/2 tsp vanilla or chocolate extract
1/2 tsp cinnamon
Crushed ice (optional)
Method of preparation
To prepare the lactation smoothie combine all the above mentioned ingredients in a blender and blend till the desired consistency. Transfer the smoothie to your favorite glass and enjoy. You have your on the go lactation smoothie.
Remember: You can use full fat milk instead of almond milk if you like. Don’t use low fat or skimmed. You can use coconut milk also. I like the taste of coconut milk.
I have seen many cook the oats before adding to their lactation smoothies but I would say just toss it in, don’t cook.
I add honey as a sweetener, you can skip honey, it is your choice. But I think you will have to. I can’t think of drinking the lactation smoothie without any sweeteners. But its your smoothie, your choice.
We add vanilla or chocolate extract for flavor. Don’t skip that, I would say, because the brewers yeast has an awful taste. If you can bare with it, then cool.
If you want it chilled then add crushed ice as much as you like. You can also add frozen banana and milk. Trust me, the chilled version is yumm! But you don’t have to necessarily make the chilled version skip ice if you like it that way.
If you hate the taste of any particular ingredient, you can always skip that particular ingredient or just substitute it for any other ingredients of your choice. This is your lactation smoothie you can customize it as you like. The brewers yeast is the one I hate about this recipe of lactation smoothie but I was ready to adjust. After all, this is for my baby. But you can skip if you don’t like.
Few other tips for increased lactation
- Always remember to drink lots of water.
- Using Fenugreek seed is the most popular and effective way for increasing lactation. I have been given fenugreek tablets from my doctor, to boost supply. You can also drink fenugreek water or maybe include some fenugreek porridge in your diet. It works.
- One important point is to always remember is to remain happy and stress-free.
- I know this might sound impossible with a baby around, but take plenty of rest. Rest is really important.
- Oatmeal is one great ingredient to boost lactation, try to include oats more and more in your diet as porridge, smoothies, cookies, whatever.
- Include more vegetables, fruits and green leaves in your diet.
If low milk production is stopping you from breastfeeding your baby, try the lactation smoothie and see the change. I have had good results so will you.
